Carolina Herrera: Socialite to Seamstress

Share This On:

The woman behind the ladylike designs is actually a Venezuelan aristocrat, which helps to frame the style and class that her clothing exudes. Carolina Herrera was encouraged by Diana Vreeland to design clothing, and in 1981, she released her first collection.

Before Herrera designed clothing, she kicked it with Mick Jagger and Jackie Onassis, was photographed by Andy Warhol, and generally spent her time being fabulously well dressed.

Next Friday, at an elegant age 73 (though she could easily pass for 60), Herrera will be receiving the Fall Superstar award from Fashion Group, or FGI. Margaret Hayes, President of FGI, told WWD:

“Carolina is an international icon and a brilliant businesswoman. For over three decades, she’s remained true to her elegant design aesthetic in everything — from her signature collection to her bridal, accessories and fragrance collections — while presiding over a global business with a singular focus on excellence. She has an innate understanding of what smart, chic women everywhere want when it comes to style and beauty.”

Past winners of the Superstar award include Karl Lagerfeld, Oscar de la Renta, and Donna Karan. Also being honored the same night with Star awards are Haider AckermannGareth Pugh, and Derek Lam

Congratulations, Carolina!
