Exfoliate and moisturize in 10 seconds

During the summer, heat, sun, and saltwater can cause parched lips. Lipsticks, especially long wearing formulas, also have a tendency absorb moisture. Bright pinks, red oranges, and corals are the colors of the season, and trust us,  fucshia does not look good on flaky lips.  If you don’t have time to rehab your lips with a weeks worth of hourly chapstick applications before your date, thankfully there’s a solution (and it’s cheap!) Fall called for luxe, lush lips while summer means a more casual vibe with statement colors. To transition your hues to summer minimalist chic, or to tone down colors if you’re an apprehensive first-time lipstick wearer, matte is the way to go!  Sometimes you find the perfect shade, but it’s glossy or you just want to use your fall lipsticks but  don’t want to shell out another 25 bucks for Nars’ matte version. The easy fix is already in your makeup drawer! Simply dust translucent loose powder on a tissue and blot your freshly applied lipstick. Bam – matte finish! The editorial was gorgeous, but what really caught our eye was Kate’s wavy, tousled chop. In November, Vogue championed what they called the “haircut of the moment,” which was debuted on Karlie Kloss for the month’s issue. Six months later, that haircut has continued on to become the signature length for the season.

To us, the cut is reminiscent of a modern Marilyn bob. The look was also popularized in the 60′s with Jean Shrimpton and Jane Birkin.

The great thing about this shoulder-grazing haircut is its lack of fussiness. If your hair is wavy like Kate’s, let it fly free, and even encourage it with hairspray. On the other hand, if your locks are straight, opt for something more sleek and Manhattan with Jean and Jane’s versions. But because this cut isn’t too short, you’ll still be able to pull it back into a ponytail and out of your face, should you choose.

We spotted this beauty outside of Momofuku Milk Bar, one of our favorite treat spots in NYC. While indulging in a refreshing summer cold brew coffee and Perfect 10 cookies by Karlie Kloss, (remember our post about her last week?) When it comes to getting dressed on Sunday mornings, we’re generally in the mood for comfort. Who knows what we may have gotten into last night? (Hopefully we made good decisions!) We love how Nebi kept her look casual but still trendy. A tee, maxi skirt and tennis shoes are perfect for any occasion, especially on a weekend when we can take the time to relax sans uniform or dress code. A pair of Ray Ban sunglasses are such a classic look that they’ll never go out of style, especially tortoise shell Wayfarers like the ones Nebi is sporting. Her gold jewelry from Ethiopia was not only stunning but we’re sure the pieces are one of a kind. We loved how Nebi strayed from the usual monochrome look that’s so typical of New York, and instead wore a color block tee. The oranges in the shirt really gave us a summer vibe, and made us crave creamsicles. Thank god we were already outside of Milk Bar, phew.

As if heading the creative direction for three fashion houses wasn’t enough on someone’s plate, Karl Lagerfeld has demonstrated his penchant for photography in this month’s Vogue Germany. The German native has taken photographs for furniture company Cassina, and will be the topic of an exhibition in July for Haute Couture Fashion Week regarding the photographs he took for Fendi. The title of the editorial, roughly translated to “Great Freedom: The SAILOR LOOK meets on the element of ROCK CHIC,” sets the tone for the fierce styling, which does feel distinctly German, and is definitely edgy. The editorial’s models are extremely relevant right now, as Saskia de Brauw (with the short dark hair) is currently considered the fourth top model in the world by Models.com, and Ashleigh Good hits #3 on the Hot List.

One look at Freja’s boyish androgyny makes us want to chop off our hair and let it all go messy, and her thin face and handsome cheekbones only show off her fierce beauty. She also has a neck tattoo that says, “Float”, as well as a pistol tattoo on one of her biceps. Is there anything more edgy or hardcore than that? Well, maybe, but we doubt few people could pull either off so well.

When we’re not swooning over Freja’s personal style we’re in love with the entirety of her modeling career. Have you even seen this editorial by Paolo Roversi for Vogue Italia? The contrast of fabric and light verses shadow are breathtaking. The whole concept is positively stunning. (Insert emoji hearts for eyes face here)

According to tradition, Resort clothes should inspire travel to exotic destinations, be easy on the eyes, and simple to understand. Vacation shouldn’t be complicated, nor should a quality resort collection.

Though everyone has spent time leafing through Chanel and Dior’s resort collections, there are many lesser-known fashion designers creating unique statements in the realm of resort, like Ireland-native J.W. Anderson, for example.

J.W. Anderson currently takes up residence in London and is renowned for his chunky minimalism. He has created a resort collection for 2014, and while the collection is streamlined and pleasantly simple, it also has an urban edginess that will call out to the artsy folk of New York City more so than the wealthy housewives in California. Anderson’s resort look challenges the notion that resort is merely an easy-to-digest and thereby easy to wear collection of clothing; his pieces, though covetable and beautiful, would make bold statements and be an object of art. The thirteen-look collection features one lone look in red: the rest remain in black and white.

LACE SHORTS

Repurpose those old jeans by making cutoffs. Don’t just stop there! Embellish those shorts by adding a bit of lace! You can also try using lace as your pockets or maybe even have different areas on your shorts covered in lace. It’s easy to experiment with different looks and see what you like best. Don’t just think you have to stick with denim. You can rework black shorts for fancier pajama shorts.

STATEMENT SHOULDERS

This DIY project will take you less than 10 minutes to make. Turn a plain old long-sleeved shirt into this brand new top. Just use liquid stitch glue to join the two pieces of lace and your top. Look for lace from a fabric store or Etsy.

NOT YOUR ORDINARY TANK TOP

Turn an ordinary tank top into a fancier blouse just by adding lace to the sleeves! Use a spaghetti strap, lace trim, and sewing materials (needle/thread/scissors/pins) to make this simple blouse.

SWEATERS

For those chilly summer nights, try this sweater DIY! This semi-backless sweater is cute and will keep you warm and feeling comfortable on those summer nights.

A LIGHT SCARF

Scarves aren’t strictly for Fall and Winter. This lace-tipped scarf will look great with a fitted dress or regular t-shirt and jeans. All you need is some fabric, thread, and lace to create this light scarf. By adding lace, the scarf gives a summery vibe. Pick bright colors like green, yellow, or light blue!

If you want to go all out and have no shame in your lace game, paint your nails with some lace designs like these.

Next we have Urban Outfitters. If you’re shopping on a budget but can only make it to one store, never underestimate the power of Urban Outfitters. Whether you’re shopping for yourself, your brother, your home, or your dog, Urban Outfitters is the place to go. They literally have it all, from kitschy gifts to designer labels, and with inexpensive prices and a pretty large sale section we often go in for only one thing and come out with a dozen.

- Ernest Hemingway

For this week’s Style Icon Thursday, we consider Ernest Hemingway and his manliest of manly style in honor of the menswear fashion weeks happening across the globe. In his lifetime, Hemingway survived two plane crashes, befriended F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein, hunted sharks with machine guns, and won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Though he may not strike many as a style icon, Hemingway was very specific about his style in all mediums, as those who have read his writing will attest. “My aim is to put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way,” he wrote, and this approach follows through to his clothing. This preference for simplicity in dress may have begun in the first World War when Hemingway was an ambulance driver in Italy. Wearing military garb from age 18 through 20, this masculine and purely practical style of dress made an impression that would follow throughout his life.

Hemingway is often associated with drinking far too much and the rather tragic end of his life, but in his youth, he was a handsome young man with a passion for writing and the outdoors.

Following his time in the war, Hemingway’s style reflected the trends of the 20′s in which slightly oversized formal suits were favored. He lived in the center of the fashion and art world when he moved there with the rest of his expatriate writer friends such as Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and Fitzgerald. He was very much in love with his wife, Hadley, and was enjoying the prime years of his life. Jeffrey Meyers’ biography on Hemingway described him as a “tall, handsome, muscular, broad-shouldered, brown-eyed, rosy-cheeked, square-jawed, soft-voiced young man,” and considering that he spent his days and nights writing and learning from other writers he admired, it must have been the happiest time of his life.

Hemingway’s end may miss the simple heroism evident in his novels such as For Whom the Bell Tolls, but until that day in 1961 when he shot himself with his favorite shotgun, he lived out his days with shenanigans, legendary drinking sprees in which he would have absolutely no hangover the following day, and traveling the globe.

A Hemingway-inspired wardrobe may consist of hardy woolen sweaters, military-inspired clothing, combat boots, plaid shirts, and sturdy fabrics such as tweed, wool, and flannel. Don’t forget the flask!
